I was really excited to talk with you all at the event! Here is additional information you might find helpful. Pink text contains links to resources.
Here are some of my social media links that will show you a little more about me.
If I mentioned my ZBrush jewelry course, and you’d like to be enrolled at no cost, text me at 512-981-8924.
If I mentioned the Holiday 3D CAD Cookie Cutter Workshop, the tentative date is Thursday, December 7th. Complete the form at the bottom of the page to be added to the interest list.
Game Design, Book Cover Design, & Jewelry Design
If you saw me working with a pen on a tablet and creating monsters or jewelry, I was working with a piece of software called ZBrush. ZBrush is the “industry standard for sculpting and painting,” and it’s used by the movie industry and other creative industries to sculpt on the computer screen. Almost every movie house in Hollywood, including Lucasfilm, Disney, and others, use ZBrush to create complex models for the movie screen. Other companies like Hasbro use ZBrush to create action figures.
Here’s a cool ZBrush Demo Reel from a few years ago:
If you’re interested in seeing how game characters are made:
I use ZBrush to create models for jewelry, which are then printed to a 3D resin printer that creates really smooth models:
3D Design for 3D Printing on the iPad
If you saw me designing 3D models on my iPad, that software is called Shapr3D. Shapr3D is FREE for students, so you can go to their pricing page and scroll to the bottom to learn how to upload your student ID and get a license that’s good for one year.
It is available for Mac, Windows, and iPad (not Android tablet as of yet). It’s unique because it uses your fingers for navigation, but the Apple Pencil for drawing and manipulating shapes.
3D Design for Home Design/Room Design
Another piece of software I use is called SketchUp. It was purchased by Google to help populate buildings on Google Earth, then sold to its current owner, Trimble. Architects use this software to design homes and buildings, and I use this for woodworking and furniture design.
I have intro videos for this on my YouTube channel, which is under Kat Adair, or TrainerKatKramer. Here’s an example of a video I made that shows how to use the software to design a piece of furniture out of common lumber.

Designing—Slicing—Printing
Formlabs Form 2 Resin SLA Printer
When designing for 3D printing, you create a model on your computer, then export it into a format that can be imported into something called a slicer. Slicers prepare the models for printing—they take the 3D models and “slice” them into layers. A couple of slicers I use are from Cura and Prusa. Once the model is sliced, it is exported into something called “g-code,” which is the language used by the printer.
Printers
There are many different types of printers available. The main two types are filament printers and resin printers. Filament printers use rolls of filament; when the filament is heated and pushed through a heated nozzle, the printer “draws” the layers one-by-one. Resin printers use vats of liquid resin that’s light-sensitive; the layers are cured by either a laser or light transmitted through an LCD screen…sort of like the portable projectors used in schools.
